How to support a peer

Last Updated September 1st, 2025.

As a peer on Uplift, you’ll be offering valuable support to others in our community who are navigating life’s challenges. Your perspective, rooted in lived experience, can be especially powerful. Not sure how to help? Here are some ways you can support others effectively:

🎧 Practice Active Listening

Really tune in to what the other person is saying. Show you’re paying attention by paraphrasing key points in your replies — this is called reflective listening. For example:

  • “It sounds like you’re saying…”

  • “What I’m hearing is…”

This lets them know you’re engaged and that their words matter.

❓ Ask Open-Ended Questions

Help them open up by asking questions that invite longer responses. Try starting with “How” or “What” instead of “Yes/No” questions. Examples:

  • “What happened?”

  • “How did that make you feel?”

  • “What do you think you’ll do next?”

💙 Validate Their Feelings

Everyone wants to feel understood. Use supportive statements like:

  • “That’s a lot to handle.”

  • “I’m sorry you’re going through this.”

  • “It sounds like that really hurt you.”

This creates a safe space for them to share honestly.

🤝 Avoid Judgment

Leave your assumptions at the door. Focus on being present and supportive, not on trying to “fix” things. The goal is to make them feel heard, not judged.

📝 Offer Advice Carefully

Advice isn’t always what someone needs. If you feel the urge to share, keep it gentle and only offer it if they ask or if you’ve built trust. Sometimes, just listening is the best help.

🌱 Be Genuine

Don’t force comparisons. Unless your story truly connects to theirs, avoid saying “I know how you feel.” Authenticity matters more than shared experiences.

✨ Keep It Respectful

Support rooms are safe spaces. Avoid arguments or conflict with the person you’re supporting — or with others in the room. It’s okay to disagree, as long as you remain respectful and kind.

🌟 Trust Your Instincts — With Care

Go with your gut when it helps you empathize, but be open to correction. If they clarify something, accept their perspective. Respect and acceptance are the foundation of Uplift’s community.

By practicing these techniques, you’ll help create supportive, compassionate conversations that embody what Uplift is all about: supporting each other.
